Above a dirty bookstore... by =TheObviousChild:iconTheObviousChild:

Full title: Above a dirty bookstore off Euclid Avenue: Saturday Nights In With Tom Waits

The devil's in your bedroom -
under the bed, romancing
a waitress.  He's reciting
the names of cars
you wish you owned
like a psalm: T-Bird.
Cadillac.  Buick.  Olds.

(He sounds like something
halfway between Charles Bukowski
and a motor powered by razorblades
and forty cigarettes a day.)
He drinks far too much  -
rot-gut perfumed gin -
his jeans are worn through
at the knees and he laughs
like an extractor-fan
and plays a mean piano.

He makes you yearn
for fried food in the early hours
from some backstreet diner
where they don't wash the plates
and the counter-girl
has tattoos like a sailor.
He makes you search
the ashtray, the fireplace
and the slick, wet windowsill
for any cigarette-end
that might yield
another grudging lungful.
He makes you wish you were old,
makes your whisky taste like tin -
makes you feel drunk
and cheap by candle-light,
makes On The Road
sound like a travel guide.

The devil's in your hallway,
calling up old girlfriends,
burning all the matches.
He's already claimed
your shoes for his own,
pocketed your lighter
and your Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
He's installed a jukebox
in your mind's eye,
and it plays Mack The Knife
over and over in the dark.
You won't sleep tonight,
because you know
he'll steal your car,
the absinthe you've been saving
and all the loose change
he can find.

Late on a Sunday night, Leon sketching furiously - cigarette smoke, hot tea, cheap wine, incense, candles, Tom Waits. It';s no wonder this happened, really.

Tell me if it's truly awful, I'm too drunk right now to know either way.

I think it's a beautiful piece of art. You're really talented, even if you are drunk! XD Not that being drunk is a bad thing. I'm all for it. I've just never been it.

Hehe, have you heard any Tom Waits? I think he's permanently drunk, and if he isn't, he pretends to be. I'm very glad indeed that a sober person both 'gets' and likes this poem! Thanks!

Ya, It's truly awful, in a devilish way though. :bucktooth:

Not sure if this is a compliment or not, but thanks...

Are you kidding? I LOVE Tom Waits! He's only one of the best musicians ever. He's brilliant. I don't think he's permanently drunk, but he is 95% of the time. :D

You're welcome. It's a fab poem.

Wahey! You are officially awesome.
(actually I think he has just about given up drinking these days... & totally given up smoking, which is obviously good but also somewhat depressing)

Psh. If he can pull off life as a fab singer will millions of fans and all that, it should teach them that they can do it to!

But oh well, I suppose. There's nothing can be done now.

Actually, I would love to continue this convo, but I've got stuff I've gotta work on for school. Thanks for chatting with me! I hope the rest of you evening goes well. :)
